Vandals broke a statue of Pharaonic times in a city of Egypt, according to the radio “Vesti FM”.
According to the testimony of local residents, the monument was dumped by the supporters of the local branch of one of Islamist movements.
City authorities have not yet confirmed the involvement of Islamists into the act of vandalism and suggested that everyone should wait for the results of the investigation.
Broken statue of the ancient Egyptian Pharaoh was found lying on the ground in the early morning.
Attackers wrapped the statue with clothesline to dump it from the pedestal.
After the popular uprising in Egypt in late January this year and the resignation of Hosni Mubarak, a number of Islamic leaders complained about a large number of monuments, “idols” of ancient Egypt, placed over the place and called to remove them from the streets of the cities to the museums.
